The Liberia international airport, named after Daniel Oduber, will be in private hands for the next 20 years. The Contraloría General de la República (Comptroller’s office) just gave Consorcio Coriport the airport concession. The Consorcio Coriport is made up of MMM Aviation Group S.A., Emperador Pez Espada S.R.L., Brad and Ted Corporation S.R.L., Cocobolo Inversiones and Houston Airport System. The highway that connects San Jose – Juan Santamaria International airport – Alajuela will be partially closed tonight from 10 pm to 5 am tomorrow.

The projects, which will cost about $13.5 million, includes new firefighting equipment, radar, and approach lights to help guide pilots to the runway when visibility is low. Currently lingering clouds pose a problem for landing. On some occasions pilots divert flights to Panama or Liberia airport, creating delays and headaches for travelers.
The lights will be provided by Siemens at a cost of $2.6million. The new radar system will be provided by the Central American Arial Navigation Corporation (COCESNA) at a cost of $5.4 million. The 7 specially equipped fire-fighting vehicles will cost $5.4 million.
HASDC is taking over completion of the San Jose international airport terminal that was originally supposed to be the responsibility of Alterra. Hasdc is using its own money to complete work: that’s a significant risk as they are still waiting for the work approval from the Contraloría General de la República (CGR) to take over the project.
Why is the change required? Alterra ran out of money to complete the installation, that simple.
The Consejo Técnico de Aviación Civil (CTAC) approved the project change last year allowing HASDC to take over the management and completion of construction.
Last weekend, workers started installing the metal structure of the roof: what a nice change for the project that has been idle for several years.
