Year after year heavy rains hit the Provincia de Limon causing severe flooding.
Last week emergency officials have released a $5.25 million plan to tame the Sixaola, Chirripo, and Banano and rivers, that do most of the damage.
Retaining Chirripo will protect the important Ruta 32, which frequently is flooded, causing millions of dollars in damages to the tourist industry each and every year. Read more »
Rodrigo Arias Sánchez, minister of the Presidencia, said that the central government is increasing the termination payoff. Under the terms of the new proposal, each worker would get 2.7 million colons ($4,800) instead of the original 1.7 million colons ($3,000) for every year of the first 20 they worked on the docks. For example, a 20-year employee would get almost $100,000! On top of that there is a good chance that the same worker will be re-hired by the new management. Read more »
The weather institute said that Limon received 16.5 inches of rain in the last 3 days. That’s more than it usually gets during the entire month of May.
Officials confirmed that the Limon airport was flooded and 1 home was destroyed by a slide. The highway south of Limon is partially flooded.
