Heredia branch of the valley train is in operation

The train has been carrying passengers since Monday, but it appears that the officials are trying to keep it a secret. The Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles has not announced the start of service, although there has been traffic each day.

Passengers can purchase a 350-colon (60 cents) ticket at several train stations. The passenger cars are air conditioned, have a television showing ads and the seats are quite comfortable. Those are the  cars that were recently purchased from the Spanish company.

License plate restriction in the downtown area is gone

In July of 2008, 2 decrees told that motorists could not enter the greater San Jose area one day a week, depending on their license plate number.
The first  decree covered peak traffic hours only in the morning and evening. A later decree restricted the hours from 6 am to 7 pm.
The court made its decision on the fact that the executive branch has established sanctions for violating the decree, an area reserved for the Asamblea Legislativa, and that the decree restricted a fundamental liberty of free transit. The court also mentioned that the decree incorrectly enhanced the power of the Transit Police.

Though the court rejected the decree as of Friday it clearly said that there would be absolutely no refunds on tickets issued up to that date.

The commuter train Heredia – San Jose will start running in a couple of weeks

Yesterday the president of Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles (Incofer)  Miguel Carabaguíaz confirmed that Spanish technicians had completed their adjustments to the 4 Apolo trains, so the train can start running in as little as 2 weeks.

The train will cost 350 colones (60 cents) one way. The first train will be leaving the Heredia station at 6 am and running every 15 minutes until 7:45 am. Service will then resume at 4 pm and run until 6:45 pm with the same interval between trains.

The train from San Jose to Heredia will run from 6:30 am to 7:15 am and from 4:30 pm to 6:15 pm.
